As a patient or health care provider, it can be difficult to wade through the various options
of medicines available to patients with chronic diseases especially when we must consider that what works for one patient may not work for another. Patients, are usually faced with the choice of using modem medicine, traditional medicine or alternative medicine.
Modern medicine or standard medical care is practised by a medical doctor or a health care tom. They work in synergy with medical laboratories and pharmaceutical companies before prescribing drugs for the treatment of specific diseases. These drags are sold only in recognised drug stores and pharmacies in which storage facilities are appropriate. However, some people with health problems. simply go to roadside vendors and acquire medicine. from there. Sometimes oat of the need to cut down cost, roadside medicine vendors may sell expired drugs or counterfeit medication to people. Most of the many health complications people face today are the result of improper management of simple health problems. The consumption of roadside medicine is one of such cases.
Over decades, serious attention has been given also to traditional medicine. Research has
proven that up to 80% of the population rely on traditional medicine. for their primary health care needs. African governments are designing policies to encourages research on traditional medicines just as the Chinese have done. It is good that traditional medicine does not interfere with the consumption of conventional medicines... If more research is carried out on this and proven true, things may he better for patients with complicated health situations. This is because the time taken for modern medicine to treat an illness may be seriously reduced as the addition of traditional medicine is likely to enhance effectiveness in treatment. s
The limitations of modern and traditional medicine have caused patients to opt foe alternative
medicine. This is the treatment that is used in placer of a conventional medical treatment. If your doctor prescribed you a blood pressure- medication but you opted. instead to overhaul your diet in the hope of reducing your blood pressure, it could be an of alternative or natural
medicine. Most patients who opt for this method of treatment, are seeking for a more natural
approach to healing their diseases. Examples of alternative medicine include: acupuncture, herbal teas, dieting and sports.
Regardless of which branch of medicine you ascribe to. you Should ensure that any medication, supplements or treatments. you are taking are safe.
